What Silence Cost

By evening, the wing sounded different.
Not peaceful. Hollowgate was not built for peace. The doors still closed hard. Keys still turned. Voices still bounced off tile and brick. But the old rhythm had cracked.
Tasha had been moved pending review. Jules had asked to speak to staff. Priya had given a statement with both hands wrapped around a paper cup, shaking so badly Nia had to wait between questions. Ruby had been relocated to another landing and given the kind of quiet attention she should have received weeks earlier.
Maeve returned to her cell with no applause and no visitors.
She preferred it that way.
Hero stories made prisons lazy. They let institutions pretend one brave person could fix what many responsible people had allowed. Maeve knew better. She had not saved Hollowgate. She had only forced it to look at one corner of itself without blinking.
That night, Sergeant Nia Morgan stopped outside her open door during the final check.
"Carter."
Maeve looked up from the edge of her bunk.
"You could have told me earlier," Nia said.
"Would you have believed me earlier?"
Nia did not answer quickly. That was why Maeve respected the answer when it came.
"Maybe not enough."
Maeve nodded once.
Nia rested one hand on the doorframe. 'I should have seen more.'
"You saw today."
It was not forgiveness. It was not absolution. It was a line drawn where tomorrow could begin.
The next morning, the canteen served weak tea and potatoes again. The food had not improved. The benches were still scratched. The windows still let in thin light that made everyone look tired.
Maeve sat at the same end of the same table.
Ruby, now steadier, passed by with her tray and paused.
"Can I sit?"
"If you want."
Ruby sat.
For a while, neither woman spoke. A spoon dropped near the serving shutters, and half the room looked up out of habit. Then, slowly, they looked back down.
Maeve picked up her fork.
This time nobody told her to kneel. Nobody reached for her tray. Nobody pretended not to see the empty space where Tasha's shadow used to fall.
Maeve took one bite and kept her eyes open.
May you like
The silence around her was still dangerous.
But now it belonged to everyone.
