The Canteen Turns

There are moments when a room changes owners without anyone touching a key.
Hollowgate's canteen changed when Priya sat down.
It was a small movement. A folding of knees. A lowering of shoulders. But it separated her from Tasha's shadow in front of everyone.
Tasha saw it and understood before anyone else did.
"Get up," she snapped.
Priya stared at the table.
"No."
The word came out thinner than Maeve's had, but it came out.
Ruby began crying silently. Not the loud kind of crying that invited pity. The exhausted kind that came when a person realized the thing they feared might finally have a name.
Sergeant Nia Morgan stepped between Tasha and the bench.
"Briggs, hands where I can see them."
Tasha's head turned slowly. 'You taking orders from inmates now?'
"I'm taking responsibility for my wing," Nia said.
The sentence hit the officers near the wall harder than it hit Tasha. Responsibility had been absent so long it sounded almost foreign in the canteen.
Jules backed away first. That broke the picture Tasha had spent years building. Without followers, without laughter, without the room pretending not to see, she was only a broad woman standing beside a tray of spilled potatoes.
Nia gave a second instruction. This time the other officer followed it. Calmly. Publicly. No performance, no violence, just procedure returning to the room that had forgotten it.
Tasha looked once more at Maeve.
She expected triumph. She expected a smile. She expected proof that Maeve had wanted power all along.
Maeve gave her none of it.
She sat back down at the end of the bolted table, lifted her plastic cup, and drank the cold tea as if the matter bored her.
That frightened Tasha more than anger would have.
"You did this," Tasha said.
Maeve set the cup down. "You did it. I just let people watch."
The canteen did not laugh.

It did something worse for Tasha.
It remembered.
