She Was Not Kneeling / Chapter 3 / 6

The Woman at the Wall

The day Tasha threw the tray, a woman in a navy uniform had been standing near the wall with a paper cup of tea cooling in her hand.

Sergeant Nia Morgan had worked at Hollowgate long enough to know the difference between a noisy wing and a rotten one. She had also worked there long enough to know that rotten things often survived because good people waited for perfect proof.

Nia did not have perfect proof.

She had complaints that disappeared when women were asked to repeat them. She had injury reports written as accidents. She had one young prisoner who cried in the laundry room and then swore nobody had touched her. She had Tasha Briggs smiling at every camera and becoming cruel only in the angles where sound was bad and officers were tired.

Then came Maeve Carter.

Nia had read her file. The file said violent, controlled, uncooperative. Nia had learned to respect files and distrust them at the same time. Sometimes a file told the truth. Sometimes it told the easiest version of a woman.

When Tasha demanded the tray, Nia did not step in immediately. She hated herself for the pause, but she took it because Hollowgate had swallowed too many half-seen incidents. She needed the moment complete enough that nobody could call it a misunderstanding.

Tasha gave it to her.

The tray hit the floor. The room froze. Maeve did not.

"On your knees," Tasha said.

Nia felt the other officer beside her shift, nervous now that the silence had become too obvious to ignore.

Maeve looked up at Tasha and spoke for the first time since the demand.

"No."

One word. Quiet. Clean.

Tasha blinked as if she had expected screaming and been offended by restraint.

"You think the uniform makes you special?" Tasha said.

"No," Maeve answered. "I think witnesses do."

A murmur went through the canteen, small but alive.

Tasha's face changed. Her sneer stayed in place, but something underneath it tightened.

Nia set her tea down on the nearest ledge.

She was already moving before Tasha grabbed the edge of Maeve's sleeve.
