Then Get Ready / Chapter 6 / 6

The Long Drive Down

By the time the sun fell behind the towers, Felicity Crane was no longer a member of the rooftop car club.

Elliot made the decision quietly, in front of witnesses but without a speech. Her account would be closed. The accusation against Ravi would be removed. The written warning in his staff file would be erased. Security would preserve the footage for the club's records in case Felicity decided embarrassment needed a lawyer.

She did not argue.

The lift doors opened behind her, bronze light catching her pale face. For a moment she looked as if she wanted to say something clever, something that could turn the story back toward her control.

Nothing came.

She stepped into the lift alone.

When the doors closed, no one laughed.

Elliot turned to Ravi.

"You should never have been left to handle that by yourself."

Ravi shook his head quickly. 'It's all right, sir.'

"No," Elliot said. "It isn't."

He handed the real fob to the valet manager, not because he needed the car moved, but because trust had to be shown where everyone could see it.

"Ravi drives it down," Elliot said. "Carefully, if you don't mind."

Ravi stared at him.

Then he smiled, small and stunned, like someone being returned a piece of dignity he had not realized had been stolen.

The crowd began to break apart. Quieter now. Less sure of itself. Some guests avoided the valets' eyes. Others said thank you when their keys were returned, awkwardly, as if the words were new to them.

Elliot stayed by the hood until the car engine started below the ramp.

The black paint no longer reflected Felicity's dress. It reflected the amber-gray sky, the city glass, and a plain white shirt belonging to a man who had not needed to shout to own the room.

He smiled once, dimple deepening.

May you like

Not because she had been embarrassed.

Because for one evening, at least, the wrong person had finally felt what it was like to be measured by people who knew the truth.
