Then Get Ready / Chapter 5 / 6

The Rooftop Learns the Price

Elliot walked to the front of the black car and rested one hand on the hood.

Not possessively. Almost gently. As if the car were not the point and never had been.

"My father delivered parcels," he said.

The rooftop held still.

"He did it for thirty-one years. Rain, snow, Christmas mornings, hospital strikes, tube closures. He wore the same brown shoes until the soles split because my school fees mattered more than looking successful."

Felicity's lips parted, but nothing came out.

"So when you use that work as an insult," Elliot continued, "you don't shame me. You only tell everyone how little you understand about the people who make your life easy."

Ravi looked down at the concrete. His eyes shone, but he did not wipe them.

The valet manager stepped forward, anger held behind professional control.

"Sir, how would you like us to proceed?"

Elliot looked at Felicity.

She had become smaller without kneeling. Her expensive dress, her choker, her sharp little clutch, all of it suddenly seemed less like armor than costume.

"First," Elliot said, "she returns the fob."

Felicity placed it on the hood with shaking fingers.

"Second, she apologizes to Ravi by name."

Her eyes flashed with one last reflex of pride. Then she looked around and found no audience left willing to carry it for her.

"I'm sorry," she said.

Ravi did not answer.

Elliot waited.

Felicity's face burned.

"I'm sorry, Ravi. I lied. I took it."

That was the first honest sentence she had spoken all night.

It did not fix anything. It did, however, make the rooftop breathe again.
