The Palace Hall Reversal / Chapter 4 / 12

The Door Opens

The great doors opened before Cassandra could answer.

They did not swing wide with ceremony. They struck the wall with the blunt force of command.

Armored guards entered first, their breastplates dulled by travel dust instead of polished for court display. Behind them came Lord Adrian Black in a blue-black velvet coat fastened with silver, his broad shoulders filling the doorway beneath the royal crest. A scar at his temple cut pale through the rough skin there. His hazel eyes moved once across the hall and understood it more quickly than the court wanted.

Laughter died in pieces.

Adrian had not been raised in drawing rooms. He had spent the last six years on the northern border commanding soldiers who did not care for ancestry if a man could not hold a bridge in rain. He was royal by blood, lord protector by decree, and disliked by half the court because he made boredom sound like treason.

He walked down the red carpet without looking at the bowed heads on either side.

Elsie remained kneeling.

Cassandra straightened. "My lord, this is a domestic matter."

Adrian stopped beside Elsie.

"A child on her knees in my sister's memorial hall is not domestic."

The words were quiet.

They carried to every corner.

Cassandra lowered her chin. "She laid hands on Princess Helena's gown."

Adrian looked at Elsie's bowed head, the trembling shoulders, the rope belt, the gray dress stained with palace dust.

"Did the gown bleed?" he asked.

A noble near the chandelier coughed into his glove.

Cassandra's pale face tightened. "Mockery is beneath you."

"Then why did you make a spectacle of it?"

No one breathed comfortably after that.

Elsie felt movement behind her. Cloth settled over her shoulders, warm and heavy. Adrian's cloak smelled of rain, leather, and cold air from outside the palace. It swallowed the gray of her dress and gave her something between the court and her shame.

He crouched, bringing his face level with hers.

"Can you stand?" he asked.

Elsie nodded, though she was not sure.

He offered his hand.

The court watched a prince-lord lift a poor girl from the carpet where a noblewoman had ordered her to kneel.

That was the first reversal.

Not proof.
Not blood.
Not law.

Only a powerful man choosing to see the person everyone else had turned into an object.

Adrian faced the hall.

"The doors will close," he said.

The guards obeyed.

Crystal trembled in the chandelier as the doors shut out the daylight beyond.

Adrian turned to Cassandra.

"Now," he said, "we will discuss what she really touched."
