The Palace Hall Reversal / Chapter 11 / 12

The Choice

By law, discovery should have turned Elsie into a princess before sunset.

By court instinct, it nearly turned her into furniture.

Within an hour, ministers were whispering about ceremonies. Ladies who had laughed that morning now offered handkerchiefs with shaking smiles. Men who had ignored the Grey Ward ledgers began speaking of national healing. Someone suggested Elsie should be moved immediately to the east apartments and dressed in white to calm public rumor.

Elsie heard all of it from a chair too large for her body.

Adrian heard it too.

He sent everyone out except Elsie, Nora, Fenn, and two guards at the doors.

For the first time since the humiliation began, the hall felt almost empty.

The gown remained at the center.
The rope from Elsie's waist lay on the chair beside her.
Adrian's cloak still covered her shoulders.

"They want to decide quickly," Adrian said.

Elsie gave a small, tired laugh. "They decided quickly when I was poor too."

Nora looked away in pain.

Adrian knelt before Elsie's chair, not as a subject before a sovereign, but as a man refusing to tower over a frightened child.

"Your name is Elspeth Helena Black by birth," he said. "You are my sister's daughter. That truth will be recorded. No one will take it from you again. But what happens next must not be another theft wearing kinder clothes."

Elsie looked at him.

"Do I have to become what they want?"

"No."

The answer came without hesitation.

Something inside her loosened so sharply she almost cried.

"What if I do not know how to be royal?"

"Then the palace can learn how to deserve you before asking you to perform for it."

Fenn wept silently.

Elsie touched the rope belt. It was rough, stained, ordinary. That morning, Cassandra had seen it as proof of low birth. Now Elsie saw Mara Thorn tying it around her waist before winter market, muttering that rich people would trip over their own ribbons long before she tripped over honest rope.

"I want Mara's name written somewhere," Elsie said. "Not hidden in a ledger. Written where people can see it."

Adrian nodded.

"Done."

"I want Grey Ward opened. Every girl paid. Every family told the truth if their daughters were moved."

"Done."

"I want Nora protected. Mistress Fenn questioned, not beaten. And Cassandra tried in public, not quietly sent to some comfortable prison because her friends are embarrassed."

Adrian's eyes sharpened with something like pride.

"Done."

Elsie looked at the gown.

"And I do not want to wear that yet."

Adrian followed her gaze.

"You never have to wear it."

She held the cloak tighter.

"Maybe one day. When it stops feeling like a grave."

May you like

For the first time, Adrian smiled faintly.

"Then one day will wait for you."
