The Northlake Frame / Chapter 5 / 6

The Cuffs in the Room He Owned

The lieutenant arrived too late and too loudly.

His name was Frank Dorsey, and he entered with a red face, an expensive watch, and the tired confidence of a man used to paperwork bending around him.

“What the hell is happening in my evidence room?” he snapped.

Sofia turned toward him.

“Your evidence room is under federal control.”

Dorsey looked at the badge, then at Mercer, then at Harlan.

His eyes stayed on Harlan a second too long.

Sofia noticed.

So did Harlan.

“Lieutenant,” Sofia said, “you were copied on three concerns related to Officer Mercer’s searches.”

Dorsey’s mouth tightened. “Internal issues are not your business.”

“Civil rights violations are.”

The room went still again.

Dorsey tried to recover. “You people don’t understand what this station deals with.”

Sofia stepped closer.

“I understand five people were arrested after evidence appeared under suspicious circumstances. I understand body-camera gaps were explained with identical language. I understand this room has unlogged packets hidden under shelving. And I understand Officer Mercer tried to plant evidence in my bag while being recorded.”

Mercer’s eyes flicked to Dorsey.

It was quick.

It was enough.

Sofia saw the chain now.

Mercer did the planting.

Dorsey buried the complaints.

The station called it aggressive policing until the right badge opened in the wrong room.

Harlan stepped forward.

“Lieutenant, I need you to surrender access credentials.”

Dorsey stared at him. “You need to remember who signs your evaluations.”

Harlan’s face did not change.

“Not today.”

That sentence broke something invisible.

Elise Trent moved beside Harlan.

Then one of the younger officers near the glass did too.

Not much.

Just enough to show Dorsey the old gravity had shifted.

Federal agents took Mercer’s sidearm first.

Then his phone.

Then his cuffs.

Harlan was the one who placed Mercer’s wrists behind his back.

The metal clicked in the same room where Mercer had tried to order Sofia’s hands behind hers.

Mercer looked at her with hatred stripped of charm.

“You set me up.”

Sofia met his stare.

“No. I gave you a choice. You chose the bag.”

Dorsey was not cuffed yet.

But when agents escorted him into the interview room and sealed his office pending a warrant, everyone understood the day had moved past one corrupt officer.

Northlake itself was on the table now.

And the camera was still recording.
