The Search That Was Too Clean

The evidence processing room at Northlake Police Station smelled like cardboard dust, cold coffee, and metal that had been wiped too many times without ever feeling clean.
Sofia Reyes stood beside the metal table with both hands loose at her sides.
She looked calm enough to irritate the man searching her backpack.
Officer Cole Mercer wanted trembling. He wanted excuses. He wanted her voice to crack so the room would have something to feed on.
Instead, Sofia watched his gloved hands move through the black fabric with the stillness of a woman counting beats.
The zipper rasped loudly.
Mercer made sure it did.
He dug past a folded hoodie, a half-empty water bottle, and a paperback with a cracked spine. His mouth carried a smug little curve, as if the search itself had been rehearsed in front of a mirror.
Two younger officers stood near the interview glass.
Neither spoke.
A camera in the upper corner watched the table.
Mercer knew about the camera.
He had counted on the angle.
His left shoulder blocked just enough of the bag when his right hand dipped near the inner seam.
Then he straightened.
Between two gloved fingers, he held a small white packet.
“Well,” Mercer said, stretching the word until it sounded like a verdict. “What do we have here?”
Sofia’s jaw tightened once.
Only once.
Mercer lifted the packet higher. “Hands behind your back.”
The room got very quiet.
Not silent.
The fluorescent light still buzzed.
A shelf clicked softly as the building shifted.
Somewhere beyond the glass, a phone rang and went unanswered.
Sofia looked at the packet, then at Mercer’s face.
“That wasn’t in my bag.”
He smiled wider. “Funny. I just found it there.”
“No,” she said. “You put it there.”
One of the younger officers shifted his weight.
Mercer turned his head just enough to make the room remember he outranked fear, if not truth.
“Cuff her,” he said.
No one moved fast enough.
Sofia’s right hand slid into the pocket of her moss-green bomber jacket.
Mercer’s grin hardened.
“Careful.”
She pulled out a black leather wallet and opened it with one clean motion.
Gold caught the cold light.
Mercer’s face changed before he could stop it.
Sofia’s voice stayed low.
“You just made a very expensive mistake. Special Agent Sofia Reyes, FBI.”

The packet trembled once between his fingers.
That was the first honest thing Mercer had done all morning.
