The Name the Yard Remembered

The name spread before the lockdown order did.
Monroe.
Not just an inmate name.
Not just a family name.
Something older.
A man called Finch, who had lost two teeth to Ronan the year before, whispered it first.
"Monroe Fold."
Someone near him frowned. "What?"
"Academy hold," Finch said. "My cousin was corrections in Trenton. They taught that in the emergency unit. Said the woman who built it could put a man down without making him bleed."
The rumor moved faster than the guards.
By the time the yard gates clanged shut, Tessa stood alone again, but differently now. Space opened around her. Men who had leaned forward to watch her fall now looked at their shoes.
Ronan sat against the wall, breathing hard.
Two guards approached him with cuffs.
Tessa raised one hand.
"He needs medical first. His shoulder is not broken, but the nerve is shocked."
One guard laughed from nerves. "You worried about him now?"
Tessa turned.
"I was worried before he touched me. That is why he can still use his arm tomorrow."
No one laughed after that.
The south gate opened.
A woman in a dark suit entered with two people behind her. She carried no weapon. She did not need one. The guards straightened because paperwork had arrived with authority.
Her name was Director Evelyn Sloane from the State Custodial Review Board.
Crowe cursed under his breath.
Sloane looked at the circle, the dust, Ronan on the wall, the guards too far from where they should have been, and Tessa standing in the middle with calm eyes.
"Ms. Monroe," Sloane said.
The yard heard it.
Ms.
Not inmate.
Crowe moved fast. "Director, this transfer inmate incited a fight during recreation. We have the matter under control."
Sloane did not look at him.
"I can see that," she said.
Tessa wiped dust from her palm onto her orange trousers.
"You are early."
"Your sealed statement said not to be late."
Ronan's head turned.
Crowe's throat moved.
Sloane stepped closer.
"Are you injured?"
"No."
"Did Deputy Warden Crowe place you in this yard against protective classification?"
The entire ring of inmates listened.
Tessa looked at Crowe.
He had taken everything from her by hiding behind procedure.
So she answered with procedure.
May you like
"Yes."
