The Concrete Circle Revelation / Chapter 11 / 12

The Choice Not to Break Him

Ronan refused the stretcher at first.

Pride survived longer than strength.

A medic crouched near him and checked the nerve response in his arm. Ronan looked past the medic at Tessa.

"You could've snapped it," he said.

"Yes."

"Why didn't you?"

Tessa thought of Cian's hands under the hood of their mother's car, black with grease, gentle with small parts. She thought of the academy mats and the recruits laughing when she threw them too easily. She thought of every night she had imagined Ronan's face and what her hands might do if she ever reached him.

The fantasies had been simple.

The moment was not.

"Because I came here to stop a system," she said. "Not become its best student."

Ronan looked away.

His cloudy eye watered from dust or pain. Maybe both.

"I can't fix him being dead."

"No."

"I can testify."

Tessa did not thank him.

Forgiveness was not a coin he could earn in one sentence.

"Then testify."

The medic helped him up. This time the giant looked smaller, not because his body had changed, but because the yard no longer held him up.

Crowe was led through the gate in restraints. His mouth kept moving, but no one leaned in to hear him.

Milo passed Tessa on his way to protective holding. His face was pale.

"Ms. Monroe," he said.

She stopped.

The title hurt more than inmate because it remembered the person the file had tried to kill.

Milo swallowed. "I am sorry."

Tessa looked at him for a long time.

"You should be."

He nodded, tears standing in his eyes.

"I know."

"No," she said. "You don't. Not yet. You will spend years knowing. Then one day you will decide whether knowing changes anything."

He accepted that as punishment because it was the first honest one he had been given.

Sloane approached with a folder under one arm.

"Your conviction is not erased today," she said quietly. "But with Reyes and Kade on record, the attorney general's office will reopen it. Protective transfer can happen tonight."

Tessa looked at the yard.

The men watched her now without chanting.

"Not tonight," she said.

Sloane frowned. "Ms. Monroe, staying here is dangerous."

"So is leaving before they know the cameras are safe."

Sloane studied her.

"You are not obligated to protect this place."

Tessa's mouth almost moved toward a smile.

It did not arrive.

"I'm not protecting the place," she said. "I'm protecting the truth before it learns how to disappear again."
