Lena Vale's Archive

The packet was opened in Conference Room Twelve.

Adrian chose the room deliberately. Glass walls. Visible from the corridor. Board aides, security staff, and two independent compliance officers summoned by Marcus stood within sight. If Lena Vale had demanded witnesses, Adrian would give her more than she asked for.

Ethan sat at the end of the table with a blanket over his shoulders and a pair of spare socks from an assistant who had offered them with tears in her eyes. He did not put on shoes yet. The bare feet had become evidence in themselves.

Marcus stood near the door.
Serena remained across the room, flanked by two guards who no longer knew whether they were protecting her from others or others from her.

Adrian opened the packet.

Inside were three things.
A small drive.
A folded photograph.
And a letter addressed in Lena's handwriting.

He touched the photograph first.
Lena stood in this very tower before the glass walls were finished, wearing a construction helmet crookedly and laughing at someone outside the frame. Beside her stood Adrian, younger, softer in the mouth, looking at her rather than the camera.

Ethan stared at it.
He had never seen them together.
That hurt him in a way he did not have words for.

Adrian unfolded the letter.
His hands were steady until he reached the second line.

If Ethan is standing in your tower, it means the people who buried me have finally reached for him too.

He stopped reading aloud.

Ethan's voice came from the end of the table.
"She said out loud."

Adrian closed his eyes.
Then he obeyed.

The letter named Dominic Calder and Serena Blackwell as the architects of the accusation against Lena years earlier. It described how emergency route data had been altered, leaked through a shell account, and traced back to Lena's credentials after she refused to sign away ownership of several safety designs. It described a pregnancy Adrian had never been told about directly because Lena's final attempts to contact him were routed through the very legal office framing her.

Then the letter named the current danger.

The tower has one hidden flaw left, Lena wrote. Not structural. Human. The private exit can be used to isolate a principal from witnesses if internal authorization is corrupted. I warned you once. You laughed. If they ever push you toward the tunnel during a board conflict, ask who benefits from the silence below.

No one moved.

Adrian looked at Serena.

May you like

She did not deny it.

That was how everyone knew the letter had hit bone.
