The Boy Behind the Door

Before anyone could move, Ethan started shaking.

Not from cold. Not exactly.
The body sometimes waits until danger pauses before admitting what it has survived.

Marcus noticed first.
He removed his own jacket and placed it around Ethan's shoulders. The boy flinched at the touch, then did not pull away. That broke something subtle in Marcus's face. He was a father himself. Two daughters. One six, one nine. He knew the difference between a child being dramatic and a child holding himself together with string.

"Tell me where they kept you," Marcus said quietly.

Ethan pointed toward the service corridor behind the blank gates.

Adrian ordered the gates opened.
The junior supervisor hesitated until Marcus looked at him. Then he complied.

They found the room exactly where Ethan said it was.
A maintenance alcove behind a utility door. No window. Cleaning carts. A low shelf. A damp pair of sneakers near the corner, one lace snapped. Ethan's backpack lay under a folded tarp.

Inside the backpack was a sealed packet wrapped in plastic and taped twice.

Marcus handed it to Adrian but Ethan reached out fast.
"No."

Adrian stopped.

The boy's face had gone pale under dried tears.
"Mom said no one opens it alone. Not even you. She said if you cared, you would open it where people could hear."

The words struck Adrian with humiliating precision.
Lena knew him too well.
Even after everything.

Serena, who had followed at a distance, folded her arms. "This is absurd. We are allowing a child to direct executive security."

Ethan turned to her.
For the first time, anger overtook fear.

"You were the woman at the flat."

Serena went still.

The hallway seemed to sharpen around the accusation.

Ethan stepped closer, jacket slipping on his shoulders.
"You came this morning. You asked about my mother's archive box. You said you were helping Mr. Blackwell."

Serena's expression did not crack. That made it worse.

"A child under stress can misidentify people," she said.

Marcus looked at Adrian.
"We can pull building entry footage."

"Do it," Adrian said.

Serena's jaw moved once.
There it was.
Not confession.
Calculation.

Adrian looked at her as if seeing a family portrait rot from the inside.

"What did Lena have that frightened you?" he asked.

Serena gave him a small, cold smile.
"Your weakness, apparently."

Ethan clutched the packet to his chest.
The boy who had arrived as interruption had become the center of the room.
And every adult around him was beginning to understand that the tower had not trapped him by accident.
