The Foot Before Takeoff

Chloe Bennett had chosen the window seat because she wanted three quiet hours and the illusion of privacy.

The flight from London to Lisbon was full, late, and already too warm. Economy passengers filed in with puffer jackets, duty-free bags, and the tired politeness people wore when they knew everyone else was just as trapped.

Chloe wedged her backpack under the seat, zipped her peach-pink sports jacket to her collarbone, and pressed her shoulder against the wall of the plane. Outside, pale daylight sat flat on the tarmac. Inside, scratched plastic, blue-gray fabric, and recycled air made everything feel smaller than it looked online.

The seat beside her belonged to a young woman in an olive jacket who put in her earbuds before she even buckled up. Across the aisle, a gray-haired man unfolded a travel magazine with the focus of someone determined to survive through print.

Then Gavin Price arrived behind them.

He filled the row with elbows first. Floral shirt, white straw fedora, flushed cheeks, mustache trimmed like it was part of a holiday personality. He laughed too loudly at his own joke while forcing his bag into the overhead bin, then dropped heavily into the aisle seat behind Chloe.

The first invasion was his knee against the back of her seat.

Chloe turned slightly. He pretended not to notice.

The second was the arm that reached past his own space to tug at the seat pocket beside her shoulder.

She turned fully then. “Excuse me.”

“Relax,” Gavin said. “Plane’s not even moving.”

Chloe faced front. She had promised herself this trip would be simple. She was going to Lisbon for four days after finishing a brutal project at work. No meetings. No guilt. No explaining herself to people who used her patience like free storage.

The aircraft door closed. Engines deepened. People settled into the cramped rituals of compliance.

That was when Gavin took off one shoe.

The smell arrived first, faint but unmistakable. Chloe’s fingers tightened around her armrest.

Then his bare foot slid forward through the gap beside her seat and landed across the top of the armrest as if claiming territory.

His heel was dirty. His toes flexed near her sleeve.

The woman beside Chloe pulled one earbud out.

Chloe stared at the foot for three seconds, long enough to confirm that yes, this was happening, and no, no one else intended to become first witness.

She turned slowly toward Gavin.

“Get your bare foot off my armrest. Now.”
