The Man in the Black Suit

Simon Reed had been told to stay thirty paces behind her.
He hated that instruction, but Margaret had been clear in the car that morning.
'If they recognize protection, they behave. If they see me alone, they tell the truth.'
So he had entered through the staff corridor with a visitor file under one arm and waited beyond the inner glass until he saw Gareth's hand close on Margaret's shoulder.
After that, he stopped waiting.
The hall saw him only as a blur of black suit and controlled speed.
Gareth was still pointing down when Simon reached him from behind. One hand caught Gareth's wrist. The other moved under his elbow. There was no punch. No performance. Just the quick, exact language of restraint.
Gareth's arm folded behind his back.
His face hit the edge of the steel search table with a flat metallic ring.
The queue recoiled.
The little boy stopped crying.
Gareth gasped, boots scraping for balance, but Simon held him in place with enough pressure to end the argument and not enough to make a spectacle of injury.
'Stay still,' Simon said.
Gareth tried to twist his head. 'Get off me! I'm security!'
Simon leaned close. 'Then behave like it.'
Margaret rose slowly.
Pain throbbed in her wrist. Dust clung to the silk of her blouse. One knee had struck the floor hard enough to ache. But her face settled faster than the hall expected. That was what made people look at her differently.
She was not recovering from humiliation.
She was collecting it.
A supervisor came rushing from the corridor, pale and breathless. Behind him came two officers, then another clerk, then the young staff member who had been watching from behind the glass.
Everyone spoke at once until Margaret lifted one hand.
Silence arrived as if summoned.
She stepped toward Gareth, who was pinned sideways against the steel table, his cheek red, his mouth suddenly less certain.
'You confused a badge with authority,' she said. 'You're fired.'
The supervisor went still.
Gareth laughed once, too loudly. 'You can't fire me.'
Margaret looked toward the supervisor. 'Mr. Hale, confirm my role for him.'
The supervisor swallowed.
'This is Margaret Ellison,' he said. 'Director of the Civic Oversight Board.'

The hall changed shape around the sentence.
Gareth's eyes widened.
