Touch My Daughter Againn / Chapter 5 / 6

The Son Who Looked Away

The story did not come out clean.

Truth rarely does when fear has been folded over it for too long.

Nora spoke in pieces. The argument at Oliver's flat. Cassandra arriving after midnight. The demand that Nora leave before the engagement announcement embarrassed the Vale family. The shove. The fall. Oliver calling the clinic instead of emergency services because his mother said newspapers loved ugly stories.

Oliver did not deny it.

That was not courage. Not yet. It was exhaustion meeting evidence.

"I thought I could fix it," he said.

Nora turned her bruised face toward him. "You thought you could hide it."

He covered his mouth with one hand.

Cassandra laughed in disbelief, but the sound had no audience left. "You are all being manipulated by a girl who wants money."

Gideon released Nora's hand and stepped fully between Cassandra and the bed.

"My daughter had a job before your son," he said. "A flat before your son. Friends before your son. What she lost around him was not ambition. It was safety."

The words struck Oliver harder than any threat.

He finally looked at Nora as if seeing not a problem, not a scandal, but a person he had failed while calling failure love.

"I am sorry," he said.

Nora closed her eyes.

The apology reached her. It did not free him.

Simon Hale informed Cassandra that her visiting access was revoked pending a formal safety review. The doctor added that any further contact with the patient would require Nora's consent.

Cassandra stared at the doctor, then at Gideon, then at the nurses who no longer stepped around her like furniture.

"You cannot do this to me," she said.

Nora opened her eyes again.

Her voice was thin, but it held.

"Watch us."

For the first time, Cassandra had nothing sharp enough to throw back.

Security escorted her out through the glass doors. She walked rigidly, pearls bright against her throat, while every reflection in the polished corridor gave her back to herself.
