Touch My Daughter Again / Chapter 1 / 6

The Slap Across the Oxygen Line

The VIP suite was too quiet for what was happening inside it.

Soft daylight filtered through a wall of white curtains and washed the room in pale calm. The oxygen tubing at Lena’s face shifted with each shallow breath. Chrome on the IV stand caught the light. Beneath the privacy curtain, shadows pooled dark and cold.

Lena Brooks lay half-upright in the bed, her fingers clamped around the sheet.

Every breath hurt.

Not enough to scream.

Enough to remind her that her body had survived a crash, a surgery, and three days of people speaking over her as if weakness had made her property.

Patricia Doyle stood beside the bed rail in a charcoal-gray tuxedo suit.

She had not removed her cream heels.

She had not lowered her voice.

She had not once asked whether Lena was in pain.

“So this is your game now?” Patricia said, gripping the bed rail with one small jeweled hand. “Act helpless and steal my son from his family?”

Lena blinked through tears.

The oxygen line tugged lightly against her cheek.

“I didn’t steal anyone,” she whispered.

Her lips cracked on the words.

Evan Doyle stood in the doorway in a moss-green shirt, hands raised and useless.

He looked thin in the hospital light. Younger too. Not innocent. Just emptied of the courage marriage required from him.

“Mom,” he said. “Please stop.”

Patricia did not turn.

That made the plea worse.

A man who cannot make his words move anyone should not pretend they are protection.

Patricia leaned closer to the bed.

“You trapped him,” she said. “You used your little injuries, your tears, your fake sweetness. And now my son is supposed to spend his life carrying you?”

Lena tried to lift herself higher.

Pain cut through her ribs.

She fell back against the pillow and hated the sound that escaped her.

Patricia smiled.

That smile was what finally scared Lena more than the words.

It was not rage.

Rage burns out.

This was enjoyment.

“You don’t belong in this room,” Patricia said.

Lena’s swollen eyelids closed for half a second.

She could have told her the truth then.

That the VIP room had been arranged before Evan’s family arrived.

That the name Brooks meant more to Harborview Global than Patricia imagined.

That Lena had hidden her father’s money because she wanted a marriage built on love, not inheritance.

But truth takes strength to carry, and at that moment even breathing felt like work.

Patricia’s hand rose.

Evan took half a step forward.

Then stopped.

The slap tore through the room.

Lena’s head snapped sideways. The oxygen tubing dragged across her bruised cheek. Her fingers dug into the white sheet until her rough knuckles whitened.

For a moment there was only the hiss of oxygen and Patricia’s satisfied breathing.

Then the glass door opened so hard it struck the wall.

Caleb Brooks filled the doorway.

Dark blue work jacket.

Gray hair damp from the corridor rain.

Broad hands closed into fists he did not yet use.

His eyes moved from Lena’s face to Patricia’s hand.

The room’s silence changed shape.

Caleb stepped to the bed and placed himself between his daughter and the woman who had mistaken illness for permission.

His voice landed low, heavy, and clear.

“Touch my daughter again and see what happens.”

Patricia froze.

Lena opened her eyes.

For the first time since the crash, safety had a face.
