The Tune He Wanted Buried / Chapter 5 / 6

The Room Becomes a Verdict

Private clinics were built to soften ugly things.

Soft curtains. Quiet shoes. Low voices. Cold bills in warm envelopes. Nothing about the room was made for public shame, yet shame found Sebastian anyway.

Dr. Pierce asked the visitors to step back and called for the clinic administrator. She did not accuse. She documented. That was worse for Sebastian, because documentation had always been his weapon.

Agnes asked for water, then asked for Theo's hand.

He held out two fingers first, as if full kindness might vanish if he touched it too quickly. Agnes wrapped her wrinkled hand around his.

"What is your name?"

"Theo Harper."

"Lena's boy."

He nodded.

Sebastian moved toward the bed. The nurse stepped in front of him.

"You cannot keep me from my aunt," he said.

"I can keep you from upsetting my patient," Dr. Pierce said.

Agnes did not look away from Theo. 'He made me sign papers last week.'

Sebastian went still.

The administrator arrived at the doorway. A security guard followed, calm and broad, his hands folded in front of him. Agnes's cousins stayed near the wall, no longer ornamental witnesses but women frightened by what they had almost allowed.

"I was not myself," Agnes whispered. "He told me I had no one else. He told me Lena had died hating me. He told me there was no child."

Theo made a sound and swallowed it.

Agnes's thumb moved over his knuckles. 'I am sorry.'

Sebastian's voice broke out sharp. 'This is grotesque. She is confused. The boy is coached.'

Theo looked at him then.

"No one coached me," he said. "I just kept what my mum gave me."

The music box had stopped, but its silence felt louder than the tune.

Agnes asked Dr. Pierce to record her wishes in the presence of witnesses. No dramatic flourish followed. No miracle courtroom appeared. Just a doctor, two relatives, an administrator, a nurse, a poor boy, and an old woman who had been silent long enough.

"Sebastian is not to make decisions for me," Agnes said, each word costing breath. "Not today. Not again."

Sebastian's eyes widened.

That was the moment everyone understood what he had truly wanted from her silence.
