The Snow Porch Reckoning / Chapter 10 / 12

The First Visit

Ethan did not see his mother for six weeks.

That was his choice, supported by the counselor and honored by Daniel even when Mara sent letters through the caseworker. The letters were not given to Ethan immediately. Adults had used words to trap him before. Now words had to earn their way back.

The first supervised visit happened in a community room with soft chairs, a small table, and windows facing a parking lot where old snow had hardened into gray ridges.

Mara arrived early.

So did Daniel and Ethan.

Ethan wore a new winter coat but kept the old gray gloves in his pocket. He did not put them on. He only needed to know they were there.

Mara’s first instinct was to rush toward him.

The supervisor lifted one hand, and Mara stopped.

That pause was the first small repair.

She waited for Ethan to approach.

He did not.

So she sat down across from him and folded her hands in her lap.

“You don’t have to hug me,” she said.

Ethan looked at Daniel. Daniel nodded once, leaving the choice where it belonged.

Mara’s eyes filled. “I am sorry I left you outside.”

Ethan stared at the table.

“I’m sorry I told you to lie without knowing I was making you carry my lie.”

His fingers moved inside his coat pocket around the gloves.

“I’m sorry I made you think you were bad.”

That was the sentence that reached him.

He looked up.

“Was I?”

“No,” Mara said. The word broke. “No. You were never bad.”

The supervisor wrote something down.

Daniel looked away toward the window.

Ethan’s face did not soften into forgiveness. Stories lie when they make children heal on command. He only nodded once, as if placing the truth on a shelf where he could inspect it later.

“Dad says doors should open for kids,” he said.

Mara covered her mouth.

“Yes,” she whispered. “They should.”

The visit lasted twenty minutes.

Ethan did not hug her before leaving.

But at the door, he turned back and said, “You can write me one letter. A real one.”

May you like

Mara nodded as if he had handed her something sacred.

Maybe he had.
