The House Divides

Jack called emergency services while Clara stayed on the floor with Elsie.

His voice cracked twice while giving the address. He tried to sound in control and failed. That failure mattered. It was the first time Clara saw the son in him instead of the husband—the boy who had spent a lifetime obeying Margot Ward before learning what obedience cost other people.

Margot stood under the lamp with her arms folded.

“She was acting,” she said.

Clara looked up so sharply Jack stopped speaking for one beat.

“She is eleven.”

“She has Clara’s nerves,” Margot replied, as if Clara were not on the floor holding their daughter through broken breaths. “You let her dramatize everything.”

Jack lowered the phone. “Mum, stop.”

The word was small.
But in that house, from Jack to Margot, it was almost rebellion.

The paramedics arrived within minutes. Their shoes sounded too loud on the runner rug. One asked questions while the other checked Elsie. Clara answered everything she could. When did symptoms begin? What had Elsie eaten? Had she taken any medication? Any known conditions? Any fall? Any illness?

At that last question, Elsie stirred.

“Tea,” she whispered.

Every adult froze.

“What tea, sweetheart?” Clara asked.

Elsie’s eyes moved toward Margot. Terror passed over her face so plainly that the youngest paramedic looked up.

“Grandma said it helps good girls sleep,” Elsie breathed. “She said don’t tell.”

Margot’s expression hardened. “She’s confused.”

Clara’s whole body went cold.

Jack turned toward his mother. “What tea?”

Margot smoothed the sleeve of her robe. “Chamomile. A harmless family remedy. Clara overreacts to everything, and now the child has learned it.”

But the paramedic’s face had changed. “We need to know exactly what was in it.”

“There is nothing to know,” Margot snapped.

Jack took one step toward her. “Then show them.”

The hallway widened around the demand.

Margot did not move.

That pause did more damage than any confession could have. Jack saw it. Clara saw him seeing it. The paramedic saw both.

Elsie was taken to the hospital for observation. Clara rode with her. Jack stayed long enough to let the police, summoned by the emergency team because a child had named an undisclosed substance, enter the house.

Margot tried to shut her bedroom door.

Jack caught it before it closed.

For the first time in his life, he kept his hand on the wood and did not let his mother decide what was private.
