Blood on the Marble

The Sterling villa looked almost indecently calm in daylight.
Sunlight poured through the great glass windows of the main hall and laid hard bands of brightness across the marble floor. The sweeping curved staircase caught the light in soft crescents. A classical sofa sat beneath the windows like a witness too elegant to interfere. Even the silence seemed expensive.
That was what made the violence feel sharper.
Vivian Sterling was on the floor beside the sofa, one hand flattened against the marble, the other pressing lightly against her mouth. Blood had gathered at one corner of her lip in a thin red line. Her cream silk slip dress had folded under her knees, its clean elegance broken by the fall. She was tall and slim, with an oval face, dark brown hair tied neatly behind her neck, gray-blue eyes, faint freckles, and the kind of beauty that became even harder to ignore when it refused to collapse.
Marcus Vale stood over her in a double-breasted black tuxedo, black shirt, and patterned pocket square, broad-shouldered and perfectly arranged except for the cruelty still alive in his chest. He adjusted his collar with deliberate calm, as if the slap had been no more than a correction. His square face held the smug stillness of a man who believed the room already belonged to him.
'This was never yours,' he said.
Serena Cross stood close to him in a bright red evening gown, one hand looped around his arm, her designer handbag hanging at her wrist. She was all polished edges and hungry delight. Her cruel smile did not flash. It settled. That made it worse.
Vivian looked up at them without blinking. Her cheek stung. Her jaw hurt. But the deeper pain was not the slap. It was the months that had led to it—the way contempt had grown in Marcus once he thought he no longer needed to hide it, the way Serena had arrived not as a secret but as a replacement, the way both of them had begun speaking around Vivian instead of to her, as if she were furniture in a house being reassigned.
Marcus turned away from her and started toward the front door with Serena beside him. 'Come on,' he said. 'We’re done here.'
Serena glanced back over her shoulder, the staircase shadows cutting across the red of her gown. 'You’re nothing but an expense here,' she said with a thin laugh.
Then the door opened.
Graham Reed stepped into the hall in a black suit and white shirt, posture straight but subdued. He had served the Sterling family long enough to know how to enter a room without making himself the center of it. Yet the moment he saw Vivian on the floor, something moved behind his professional restraint.
Marcus barely noticed. He lifted his chin. 'Boss, everything is ready,' Graham said.
Marcus smirked.
He thought the word belonged to him.
Vivian heard the sentence, wiped the blood from her mouth with two fingers, and slowly pushed herself upright.
The movement changed the room more than any scream could have.
Her shoulders settled. Her breathing evened. When she finally stood, she did not look at Marcus first. She looked at Graham.
'Cancel his funding,' she said. 'Leave them with nothing.'
Graham froze for half a heartbeat.
Then he bowed slightly to Vivian.
Not to Marcus.
Marcus turned back so fast the confidence in his face split open for the first time.
The bright hall, the staircase, the marble, the sofa—everything remained the same.
