What the House Tried to Hide
The first person to break rank was the butler.
Harris came down the front steps with both hands raised, not toward Rupert, but toward the driver. His old face had lost every trace of professional calm.
"Sir," he said to Rupert, "please move away from the vehicle."
Rupert did not ask why in front of Mabel. He only took another step back and drew his daughter with him.
Two estate groundsmen appeared from the hedge path. Not running. Not dramatic. Just steady enough to tell the driver the moment had changed. A porter locked the side gate. Mrs. Vale came out crying, one hand over her mouth.
The fake driver looked at the narrowing space around him and, for the first time, seemed less like a threat than a man who had expected fear to do most of his work.
Harris spoke quietly.
"Dennis was found in the old coach house this morning. Dazed, but alive. He said a man took his keys before dawn."
Mabel pressed her face against Rupert's side.
Rupert kept one hand on her shoulder.
He wanted to rage. He wanted to cross the gravel and drag the truth out of the stranger by force. But Mabel had stopped him with courage, not chaos. He would not answer her bravery with a scene that would frighten her more.
He looked toward the second-floor window again.
"Tell my wife," he said to Harris, "that if she has an explanation, she can give it in front of everyone."
A minute later, Celia came down the steps.
She looked elegant. That was her first defense. Cream coat, perfect hair, soft mouth, no hurry.
But her eyes went first to the driver, not to Rupert.
Everyone saw it.
Even the gardener lowered his gaze, not out of respect but embarrassment.
"Rupert," Celia said, "you are making a terrible spectacle over a child's imagination."
Mabel flinched.
Rupert felt it through his jacket.

He looked at Celia then with a calm that frightened her more than shouting would have.
"No," he said. "The spectacle is what you planned to leave behind."
