The Cabin Boundary / Chapter 3 / 6

A Mechanical Solution

Harper did not kick him.

She did not slap his foot.

She did not throw a drink, curse loudly, or do any of the things Ronnie was already preparing to call overreaction.

She used the aircraft.

Both hands clamped around the armrest.

Her shoulders set.

Her jaw went still.

Then she drove the armrest backward with one hard, clean motion.

It snapped into its upright position exactly the way it was designed to do.

Unfortunately for Ronnie, his shin occupied the space where manners should have been.

The impact made a dull plastic thud.

His foot dropped to the floor with a slap.

Ronnie’s grin vanished so fast it looked unplugged.

“Ow!” he barked.

A collective gasp moved through Row 24.

The woman with earbuds covered her mouth.

The elderly man looked down at his newspaper, then back up, clearly deciding whether laughter would be beneath him.

It was not.

He coughed once into his fist.

Dana’s eyes widened, then narrowed in the effort of remaining professionally alive.

Harper released the armrest and faced forward.

One breath in.

One breath out.

Then she turned her head slightly and spoke with the calm of a courtroom clerk.

“You really thought that was normal?”

Ronnie held his shin, face red now from pain and humiliation.

“She assaulted me!”

Harper looked at Dana.

“I moved my armrest.”

The woman with earbuds raised a finger. “That’s what happened.”

The elderly man added, “I witnessed the armrest returning to its natural upright position.”

Someone behind them snorted.

That did it.

The laugh spread in little pockets, careful at first, then harder as the absurdity broke open.

Ronnie looked around for sympathy and found only passengers who had spent years wanting someone, anyone, to punish the barefoot airplane population.

Dana stepped closer.

“Sir, where are your shoes?”

Ronnie pointed under the seat.

“Down there.”

“Please put them on.”

“She hit me with the seat.”

Harper said, “The seat defended itself.”

The woman with earbuds lost control and laughed into her sleeve.

The elderly man nodded solemnly. “Self-defense by furniture. Very rare, but justified.”

Even Dana’s mouth betrayed the tiniest twitch.

Ronnie shoved his foot into a shoe with wounded fury.

Harper looked out the window at a bright sheet of cloud and felt the cabin change around her.

Not perfectly.

Not peacefully.

May you like

But enough.

For once, the person who made the space unbearable was the one who felt embarrassed in it.
