The House Answers

For one second, the whole terrace misunderstood him.
That was the best part of the silence. It had not become fear yet. It was still amusement waiting for permission to laugh.
Noah let it stretch.
The ocean wind moved through his curls. Sweat cooled at the back of his neck. Somewhere behind the glass wall, a sensor recognized the watch, then the voice profile, then the return of an owner the house had not heard in eighteen months.
Miles said, "Are you finished?"
Noah looked at the pool and spoke clearly. "AI Butler, switch off all pool lights."
The first row of blue light died beneath the water.
A gasp came from the far side of the terrace.
Then the second row went dark. Then the third. The pool changed from electric blue to black glass, reflecting only warped faces and the pale blur of the moon behind clouds.
The music cut in half. Not off. Just lowered, as if the house itself had stepped back from the party and decided to listen.
Miles turned toward the water, cup trembling against his fingers.
"What did you do?"
"I asked my house a question," Noah said.
The guests stopped pretending they knew what was happening. They looked from Miles to Noah, then to the dark pool, then back to Miles as if his clothes might provide an answer.
They did not.
Noah raised his wrist again. "AI Butler, restrict guest audio. Exterior terrace only. House access to owner mode."
The sliding glass doors behind the bar locked with a soft, elegant click.
That tiny sound did more damage than shouting could have done.
Celia Grant made a small noise by the doors. Miles turned on her instantly.
"Fix it," he snapped.
She did not move.
Noah looked at her. Not unkindly. Not yet.
"Celia," he said, and the use of her name made her flinch, "did you authorize this event?"
Her lips parted. No sound came.
Miles stepped in front of her, angry now because the room had stopped belonging to him.
"She works for me."
"No," Noah said. "She worked for the estate."
He looked back at Miles.
"Now, you may leave on your own, or I can have security escort you out."

Miles' green eyes widened. His cup trembled so hard that red liquid touched the rim and slid down over his knuckles.
In the dark water behind him, the party saw the truth reflected before anyone admitted it aloud.
