Please Save My Baby / Chapter 5 / 6

The Child Who Arrived Before Dawn

Just before five in the morning, Hannah’s labour turned from warning to fact.

The contractions sharpened. The baby’s heart rate dipped once, recovered, then dipped again. The room filled with focused movement. Midwives. A doctor. A tray of instruments Hannah never really saw because all her attention narrowed to one command: breathe, push, stay here.

Nathan was not in the room, but his earlier steadiness stayed with her. So did the knowledge that someone now believed what had happened on that road.

At 5:42 a.m., after hours that felt much longer than a night, Hannah gave birth to a daughter.

When the baby cried, the sound cut straight through her.

Hannah laughed and cried at once. The midwife laid the child on her chest, warm and slippery and furious at the world in the healthiest possible way.

“Hello, little one,” Hannah whispered. “Hello.”

She named her Grace before anyone could tell her to wait for Oliver.

He arrived at the ward two hours later in yesterday’s arrogance, demanding to see his wife and child. Security stopped him at the desk while Nathan, called back to the hospital to complete the safeguarding referral, happened to be standing beside the maternity coordinator.

Oliver tried charm first. Then impatience. Then outrage.

Nathan listened until Oliver accused Hannah of “turning a personal disagreement into a police spectacle.”

“Leaving a woman in active labour on an unlit roadside is not a disagreement,” Nathan said. “And you will not go near her without hospital approval and her consent.”

Inside her room, Hannah heard the raised voices through the half-closed door and did something small but final.

When the coordinator came in to ask whether she wanted Oliver allowed upstairs, Hannah looked down at her daughter, then back up.

“No,” she said. “I want him kept away.”

It was the first clean boundary she had spoken in years.

Once said, it fit.
