No One Rescues Her / Chapter 3 / 6

The Snap

Liam did not plan anything dramatic.

That mattered later, when Diane tried to tell everyone he had attacked her. He did not stand, shout, threaten, or touch her. He did not even look angry enough to be satisfying.

He simply put his left hand on the front of the armrest and his right hand on the back.

The motion was small.

The bus watched anyway.

The older man held his breath. The woman with the phone lowered it, suddenly more witness than spectator. The man in the plaid shirt gripping the pole leaned into the aisle just enough to see.

Diane sensed the attention a half second too late.

"What are you doing?" she snapped.

Liam pushed.

The armrest folded back with a hard plastic crack. It was designed to move, but not gently when a shoe was using it as furniture. Diane's foot slipped off, bumped her own shin, and hit the rubber floor with a flat, ugly thud.

She shot upright.

Her mouth opened. Her cheeks flushed red under the daylight.

"You little—"

"I asked first," Liam said.

He still did not smile.

That was what made it worse for her.

If he had smirked, she could have turned the bus against his attitude. If he had shouted, she could have become the victim of his volume. But his calm left her standing in the middle of her own behavior with nowhere to hide.

The bus fell quiet except for the engine and the soft squeal of brakes at the next stop.

Diane looked around for outrage.

She found disgust instead.
