The Report in the Portico

Henry did not raise his voice.

That made it worse.

He asked the senior staff to remain on the drive and invited the arriving guests to continue inside if they wished. No one moved. Wealthy people loved privacy until someone else was losing it.

Evelyn handed Henry a plain folder. There were no markings on it, no drama, no flourish. Tobias stared at the folder as if it had teeth.

"Mr. Crane," Henry said, "I came today because three employees resigned in six weeks, two porters requested transfers, and one night cleaner wrote that she would rather lose rent money than spend another shift under your supervision."

Tobias swallowed.

"Sir, I can explain staffing pressure."

"You can explain why you told a night cleaner her accent made the lobby sound cheap?"

Tobias looked at the staff. Their faces had changed. Fear was still there, but something else stood beside it now.

"That was taken out of context."

"You can explain why you moved tips from junior porters into a discretionary fund you controlled?" Henry asked.

A bellman stared at Tobias with sudden understanding.

"Accounting error," Tobias said quickly.

"And you can explain why a gardener you believed had no status was disposable the moment guests could see him?"

Tobias' eyes flicked to the rake, then to the helicopter, then to Evelyn. He was searching for a person in the courtyard who still belonged to him.

He found none.

Henry opened the folder and removed a single page. He did not read it aloud. He only looked at Tobias over the top of it.

"My father pruned hotel roses before he managed his first kitchen," Henry said. "My mother scrubbed laundry until steam cracked her hands. There is no luxury in this building that did not begin as labor."

The courtyard had gone very still.

"You forgot that," Henry said. "Or perhaps you never knew it."

Tobias' face reddened. Sweat gathered at his hairline and slid toward one eye.
