Ask Her to Get On / Chapter 4 / 6

The Machine Becomes Evidence

The helicopter blades slowed slowly, as if the machine itself was reluctant to stop being useful to the lie.

Malcolm ordered everyone back from the aircraft. Not dramatically. Not with panic. With the voice of a man used to being obeyed and suddenly unsure who had earned that obedience.

The pilot called in the aviation safety team before Hana could object. Malcolm called estate security. One of the older guests, a retired judge with a face like folded paper, quietly told the staff to keep every witness on the lawn until the police arrived.

Hana tried to walk away toward the terrace steps.

Malcolm caught her wrist, not hard enough to hurt, but firmly enough that everyone saw her stop.

"Stay," he said.

Her eyes flashed. "You are humiliating me."

"No," Malcolm said. "I am learning you."

Noah stood near the edge of the gravel, suddenly aware of his wet shirt, his cracked boots, the mud drying on his skin. The bravery that had carried him across the lawn began to drain, leaving a boy in its place.

The pilot approached him with a folded rain jacket and draped it over his shoulders without making a speech.

"You did right," he said.

Noah nodded, but his eyes stayed on Bellamy.

The operations director had stopped moving entirely.

When officers arrived, they treated the aircraft as a danger scene. They did not say much in front of the crowd. They did not need to. The way the lead officer stepped back after speaking with the safety technician told the lawn enough.

Something had been found. Something that did not belong there.

Hana heard the officer ask for Bellamy by name and tried again to recover the room, even though the room was now a field.

"This is a grotesque misunderstanding," she said. "My husband has enemies. Any number of staff could have arranged this."

Noah looked at Malcolm. "Mr. Bellamy has a blue folder in the potting shed," he said. "He dropped it when I ran."

Hana's head snapped toward him.

There it was again: the truth arriving too fast for polish.

The officers followed Noah's direction to the shed. A few minutes later, they returned with the folder sealed in a clear evidence bag. No one could read its contents from the lawn, but Bellamy could see enough to understand that paper had become heavier than stone.

He sat down on the wet grass without being told.

Hana remained standing.

That made her look stronger for three seconds.

Then Bellamy started talking.
