Stevie Wonder’s 1972 Funk Masterpiece
“Superstition”: Stevie Wonder’s 1972 Funk Masterpiece
A biting clavinet riff, explosive groove and warning against irrational belief made “Superstition” one of Stevie Wonder’s defining recordings.
By the early 1970s, Wonder had gained greater creative independence at Motown, allowing him to write, arrange, produce and perform much of his own music.
The Hohner Clavinet drives the song with a sharp, percussive keyboard riff that functions almost like rhythm guitar. It became one of the most recognizable riffs in funk and popular music.
Guitarist Jeff Beck was involved in the song’s early history while working with Wonder. Beck helped inspire the groove, and later recorded the composition with Beck, Bogert & Appice, though Wonder’s version reached the public first.
Wonder not only sings and plays keyboards—he also supplies the song’s powerful drum performance, helping make the groove feel both tightly controlled and remarkably alive.
Despite its title, the lyric criticizes superstition. Wonder uses familiar omens and beliefs to warn about the danger of accepting ideas people do not understand.

Carly Simon’s “You’re So Vain”: The Hit That Turned a Secret Into Pop History
A sharp lyric, a surprise guest vocalist, and a mystery that never quite went away made this 1972 classic unforgettable.
The Story Behind the Song
Released in November 1972 as the lead single from No Secrets, “You’re So Vain” emerged from Carly Simon’s observations of self-absorbed men she had known. Rather than portray one person throughout, Simon later explained that the song drew on several men.
In 2015, she confirmed that the second verse referred to actor Warren Beatty. The identities behind the other verses remained undisclosed, keeping one of pop music’s most famous guessing games alive.
An Unexpected Voice in the Studio
Producer Richard Perry helped shape the recording in London. Rolling Stones singer Mick Jagger joined Simon on backing vocals after an impromptu studio visit, adding a distinctive edge to the chorus.
How Big Was the Hit?
The single topped the Billboard Hot 100 for three consecutive weeks in January 1973 and reached No. 3 on the UK singles chart. It sold more than one million copies in the United States, according to historical sales reporting.
Its audience has only grown with time: Simon’s official website reports more than 700 million Spotify streams for the song. These figures describe different platforms and periods, not a combined audience count.
Why It Still Resonates
The song transforms disappointment into wit and self-possession. Its central joke is also its enduring insight: someone so consumed by their own image may never recognize the damage they leave behind.
More than five decades later, the confident vocal, unforgettable hook, and unresolved mystery keep “You’re So Vain” alive for new generations.

The Three-Chord Hit That Changed Rock Forever
MUSIC HISTORY / 1966
The Troggs’ “Wild Thing”: The Three-Chord Hit That Changed Rock Forever
It took only a few chords and a burst of raw attitude to turn “Wild Thing” into one of rock’s most recognizable anthems. In 1966, The Troggs transformed a little-known song into a worldwide sensation—and helped shape the sound of garage rock and punk.
From a Forgotten Recording to a Breakthrough
American songwriter Chip Taylor wrote “Wild Thing” in 1965. The New York band The Wild Ones recorded it first, but their release failed to take off. Across the Atlantic, The Troggs saw something different in its simple, unruly energy.
With Reg Presley on lead vocals and producer Larry Page behind the recording, the British band delivered a rough-edged performance that felt immediate and unmistakably their own. Their version arrived in 1966 and quickly caught fire.
How Big Was “Wild Thing”?
On July 30, 1966, “Wild Thing” reached No. 1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, holding the top spot for two weeks. It peaked at No. 2 on the UK Official Singles Chart and remained on that chart for 12 weeks.
Its reach continued long after the original release: the official TheTroggsVEVO video has drawn millions of views. A reliable worldwide total for physical records sold is not publicly established, so an exact sales figure would be misleading.
A Song About Unfiltered Attraction
“Wild Thing” does not hide behind elaborate storytelling. Its playful, direct words capture the rush of desire, excitement, and romantic uncertainty. The stripped-down arrangement makes those feelings sound spontaneous rather than polished.
That simplicity became its greatest strength. From later cover versions to the rebellious guitar music it helped inspire, “Wild Thing” proved that a song does not need complexity to leave a lasting mark.

The Quiet Song That Turned Fear Into Courage
MUSIC HISTORY / STEVIE NICKS
Stevie Nicks’ “Landslide”: The Quiet Song That Turned Fear Into Courage
Before she became one of rock’s most recognizable voices, Stevie Nicks faced a question that could have ended her music career: Was it time to give up? The answer became “Landslide,” a song whose gentle melody still carries enormous emotional weight.
A Song Written at a Crossroads
Nicks wrote “Landslide” while staying in Aspen, Colorado, in the early 1970s. Her album with Lindsey Buckingham had struggled commercially, money was tight, and their future in music seemed uncertain. Surrounded by snow-covered mountains, she reflected on her relationship, her ambitions, and the frightening possibility of change.
She chose to keep going. After Nicks and Buckingham joined Fleetwood Mac, “Landslide” appeared on the band’s self-titled 1975 album, with Nicks on vocals and Buckingham on acoustic guitar.
A Slow-Burning Classic
Unlike a conventional smash hit, the original “Landslide” was not released as a single in 1975. Its reputation grew over decades through concerts, radio, and covers. A live version released as a single later reached No. 51 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 10 on the Adult Contemporary chart.
Fleetwood Mac’s official 1997 live-performance video has attracted more than 124 million YouTube views, offering one measurable glimpse of the song’s reach. A reliable worldwide total for individual song sales is not publicly established, so it would be misleading to assign one.
Why Its Message Endures
“Landslide” speaks to anyone who has feared growing older, losing love, or watching familiar parts of life change. Its power comes from the honesty of that uncertainty: courage does not mean being unafraid. Sometimes it means moving forward anyway.
More than 50 years after its album debut, the ballad remains a companion through graduations, family milestones, heartbreak, and new beginnings. Nicks turned a private moment of doubt into a song that makes millions of listeners feel understood.
